Chapter 5 · Why Women Love Assholes
The Confidence Effect
How do you tell confidence from arrogance in a man?
Confidence is one of the first things many women notice in a man, often before they can say why. In this chapter, Dana I. Halawi looks at what confidence really is, why it creates attraction, and why it can be easy to confuse with arrogance. From a distance, both can look like certainty. Up close, the difference shows in how a man treats other people, handles disagreement, and responds to a no. The chapter also warns that confidence alone says little about character. Through Nadia's story, it shows what happens when a woman stops editing herself to win approval, and why that shift matters more than winning his attention.
What this chapter covers
- Real confidence tends to be quiet, steady and comfortable, and it does not need an audience.
- Arrogance and confidence can look alike at first, but arrogance makes other people feel smaller.
- A man who can be wrong, hear criticism and accept rejection shows genuine security.
- Confidence is not proof of good character, so watch his patterns rather than his presentation.
From the book
Confidence is one of the most attractive qualities in a person for a reason. You notice it before you can always explain it. It can be the way a man walks into a room without looking around to see whether anyone approves. The way he speaks without rushing. The way he makes a decision without turning it into a committee meeting. The way he can disagree with you without becoming defensive.
None of this requires him to be the loudest person in the room. In fact, real confidence is often quieter than people expect. The man who is genuinely comfortable with himself doesn’t need to announce it every five minutes. That’s part of what makes confidence so powerful.
Reflect on this
The questions Dana I. Halawi asks at the end of Chapter 5:
- Think of a time you mistook arrogance for confidence. What was the sign you talked yourself out of noticing?
- Are you drawn to what someone believes, or to how loudly they perform believing it?
- Whose confidence in your life actually makes room for you, rather than asking you to shrink?
